Tynte's Castle faces on the east side of North Main Street in the walled medieval port town of Youghal. The castle is a rare example of the interesting monument type known as an urban tower house – a fortified residence within a fortified town.
It is the sole remaining example of several of these castles that existed in Youghal. The site of one other called 'The Magazine' was part of the ecclesiastical precinct of the Benedictine Priory of St. John that fronted onto the west sided of the North Main Street, close to the building that known as 'St. John's Priory'. Regionally, the tower house known as the 'French Prison' in Kinsale is the only other example in County Cork. Nationally, some 37 surviving urban tower houses have been identified. These buildings are put to a variety of but unfortunately, some are languishing in a poor state. For the town of Youghal, Tynte's Castle and its history is an important and very tangible part of its medieval origin, forming an important of the fabric that promotes Youghal's standing as a Heritage Town.
