Events: "Youghal Through the Ages" Heritage Week
21-28 September 2003

Youghal is a modern market town where you can see and feel the twenty-first century all around while simultaneously being aware of the quiant and wonderful atmosphere in this ancient and historical town.

The history of Youghal traces to the Early Christian Period. Collectio Hibernensis, one of the earliest collections of canon law, has strong associations with Dairinis, known recently as Molana Abbey, the island monastery in the Blackwater estuary.

After raiding Dairinis and Lismore monasteries the Vikings settled in Youghal in the 9th century laying the foundations. Still, Youghal is a Norman town guarding the River Blackwater and its rich hinterland. The first charter was granted in the early 13th century, from which period it quickly expanded into the main Norman stronghold in the area. The establishment of the town walls, the best example remaining in Ireland today, has allowed Youghal to endure the turbulent centuries.

This rich and diverse history and its wealth of cultural contributions have been hidden in Youghal for far too long. Heritage Week and the academic conference "Youghal Through the Ages" coordinated by Dr. Damian Bracken and Dr. Dagmar ú Riain-Raedel of the History Department University College, Cork celebrate Youghal's unique history.
